How proudly they pretend to be
what they are not, like steam
pretending to be heat when
it is not heat but water rising
off a hot wet rag lifted from a bowl,
my mother’s hands wringing
its limp body and dragging it across
her mother’s stroke-ridden body
while I sit in the next room trying
to write a poem about love’s sacrifices.
