Three Trees
by Emily Uduwana

On weekends we drove up
to a mountain
called Two Trees,
man-made like the creek by our house,
unnatural
like the lake by the highway
and my father would point
out the window
and he would say:
this mountain has a surprise
at the top,
three trees instead of two.
Last weekend, we drove
to my parents’ house
and I introduced you--three of us
instead of two--
and my father pointed out the window
again,
but this time
he did not call it a surprise,
this time he called it
unnatural.
